Background:-  In India the crime against its citizen has been increasing continuously  especially against the senior citizen. This ranges from the abduction, murder, theft to physical and verbal abuse. Majority of the crime are even not reported. In India we have the culture that elderly people should be respected and taken care of but it seems that our culture of respect is gradually fading. There are many reason that can be attributed to the rise of the attack for elderly civilians. Some of them could be urbanisation, children not living with their parents, lack of moral values among the youth, illiteracy, poverty etc.

Data: - The data is collected from the “ https://data.gov.in/catalog/crime-committed-against-senior-citizen”. The data contains field like crime committed again female above 50 years of age from 2008 to 2012, the crime committed against male above 50 years of age, region, and types of crime for all the states and union territory. I used tableau for visualization.
Analysis:-  Well I first divided the states to their respective regions.
Region
                                                       States
North
Haryana, U.P, Rajasthan, Delhi, Chandigarh, Utrakhand, J&K, Himachal Pradesh
South
Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, A.P, Lakshadweep, Andaman and Niko bar Island
East
West Bengal, Orissa, Bihar, Jharkhand
West
Maharashtra, Goa, Daman&Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Gujrat
North East
Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland, Assam, ArunachaL Pradesh, Sikkim
Middle
M.P , Chhattisgarh

First I tried to find out which region has got the maximum number of total crime for each region. As can be seen from the below graph that except for region of north east and east, in all the region the number of number of attacks on the elderly citizen has been fairly constant. There has been a sharp rise of the incidents on the elderly citizen in eastern region from 2011 -12.In north eastern states there has been a decline during the phase of 2008-09 but it again rose steadily.

As can be seen from the below diagram Northern region has the maximum number of the reported cases with UP as the state with maximum number of attacks.

If we see all the states then we can find that Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh , Madhya Pradesh , Maharashtra , Tamil Nadu are among the states with maximum number of crime , north eastern states are least in crime against elderly person.

In 2011 West Bengal saw tremendous rise in the crime against elderly person. The question now comes why are this states have most number of crimes against elderly people. One reason is obvious like these states are most populous states of India but so is Bihar and Gujrat but why Bihar and Gujrat have comparatively less crime against elderly person in these states.
For these we need to take a dig into the type of crime in these states. First let’s solve the anomaly in crime against the elderly person in West Bengal. If you can see in the below figure the number of kidnapping has unexpectedly increased in the year 2011 this can be mainly attributed to the fact that west Bengal has state assembly election in the year 2011 due to which there was unexpected rise of the  number of kidnapping and murders in the state during that period. West Bengal is known for political killing especially during election time and most of the elderly citizens happens to be connected to some political party therefore there is a rise in crime for this state especially during election year.

Now let’s look at other states like AP, UP, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and MP . One thing that is clearly noticeable in these states is that murder of the elderly citizen is in high frequency and also most common among all these states. One reason is that these states contains cities which are most urbanized in whole India for example AP has Hyderabad which is IT hub, UP has Noida which  is a huge commercial center, similarly Maharashtra has Pune and Mumbai. These cities are the most urbanized in whole of India and these cities follows the concept of nuclear family meaning children don’t stay with their elderly parents. In these cities migration to other countries is also common among young population as a result the elderly citizens are left alone in their homes. Murder by servants are more common among these states. Murder by close relative for property is also very common especially in UP.

If you see amount of crime committed against men than against women , it can be easily figured out that the number of crime against men is much more than against women.

Conclusion:-  In conclusion it can be said that the crime on the senior is on a rise . Some states like West Bengal, AP,UP, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and UP are states with most number of crime. North East is the region with least number of crimes mainly due to less population and also less urbanized culture. West Bengal has an unexpected rise in the number of crime especially during 2011 due to election. States like UP,MP, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and AP has high rate of crime mainly due urbanized culture in the cities. Murder is the most common category of crime
